I'm back. It's been a busy new year which is good for business but not so good for keeping up on my blog. When life gets busy some things have to give (for a short while), I'm a true believer in balance starting with eating well, sleeping enough and avoiding stress.
Recently I was given an amazing opportunity to teach at The Institute of Holistic Nutrition. I teach a course called Nutrition and The Environment. It's right up my alley, engaging the students in environmental issues and our health. We cover everything from soil health, sustainable agriculture, food processing, the ingredients in beauty products, GMO, EMFs and more. It's an intense course but my objective is for each student to leave empowered with knowledge so they can spread the word and know that they have a voice to speak up and make change in the world.
I also finally made it to the Guelph Organic Conference as a representative from The Big Carrot where I work as an on-site nutritionist. It was an inspiring and informative weekend. I ran into old friends and met some new ones. The expo was an amazing display of the organizations and people dedicated to promoting health and wellness through organic agriculture.
In January I was invited to speak to the GIRLS CLUB at Williamsford Road Public School in the Beach neighbourhood of Toronto. This group of grade 6 girls meets monthly to discuss issues of health, self-esteem and general interest of 11-12 year olds. We talked about beauty products and some of the not-so-healthy ingredients that can be in our shampoo. Imagine the reaction when I told them that 'formaldehyde' a preservative in products is the same stuff we use to preserve dead bodies. We talked about alternatives and even made a simple hand scrub with sesame oil, lavender essential oil and sugar. Rather than eat the sugar we used it to make our hands nice and soft. Can't say enough about health and wellness education at a young age, these girls were clearly very bright and could easily be the leaders of our future.
I have added a 'student web links' to my blog. This virtual connection will lead you to some of the amazing up and coming Holistic Nutritionist of the future.
